Felony Charges Mean Higher Penalties

Theft charges are defined by the value of the alleged stolen goods. Penalties for felony theft charges — legally called grand larceny — vary based on this value. In general, those charged with grand larceny can expect:

  • Up to four years in prison and up to $5,000 in fines for goods valued between $1,000 and $3,000
  • Up to seven years in prison and up to $5,000 in fines for goods valued between $3,000 and $5,000
  • Up to 15 years in prison and up to $5,000 in fines for goods valued between $5,000 and $1 million
  • Up to 25 years in prison and up to $5,000 in fines for goods valued over $1 million

Theft charges can go hand-in-hand with other charges too, like burglary (breaking into a building or store), identity theft or financial fraud. This will only increase the penalties you face.
